Frequently asked questions about septic tanks: What exactly is a septic tank? The septic tank is a large container usually buried near the home that receives all of the waste water.
Solids settle to the bottom and grease and lighter solids float on the top. Healthy bacteria continually break down these materials and allow effluent water to leave the tank to be dispersed through the leach field.
The hookup fee does not include any of the sewer line that comes from the main line to the home or business. Depending on the distance and whether the home or business is below grade from the hookup point, the cost can become quite expensive.

Abstract Timely assessment of the aggregate health of small-area human populations is essential for guiding the optimal investment of resources needed for preventing, avoiding, controlling, or mitigating human exposure risks, as well as for maintaining or promoting health. Seeking those interventions yielding the greatest benefit with respect to the allocation of resources is critical for making progress toward community sustainability, reducing health disparities, promoting social justice, and maintaining or improving collective health and well-being.
More informative, faster, and less-costly approaches are needed for guiding investigation of cause-effect linkages involving communities and stressors originating from both the built and natural environments. This nascent approach can be referred to as Sewage Chemical-Information Mining SCIM and involves the monitoring of sewage for the information that resides in the form of natural and anthropogenic chemicals that enter sewers as a result of the everyday actions, activities, and behaviors of humans.
Of particular interest is a specific embodiment of SCIM that would entail the targeted monitoring of a broad suite of endogenous biomarkers of key physiologic processes as opposed to xenobiotics or their metabolites. This application is termed BioSCIM—an approach roughly analogous to a hypothetical community-wide collective clinical urinalysis, or to a hypothetical en masse human biomonitoring program.

What is the proper purchasing procedure for construction software that would be used by city inspectors? Is the purchase of computer software a purchase of supplies or a purchase of services? If the primary or sole cost is for consultant services to customize the program for the city, it is a purchase of services. There is no state law requirement for code cities over 20, to go out for bids for the purchase of materials, supplies and equipment. However, a couple exemptions from the competitive bidding requirement may apply, including RCW Therefore, there are no specific statutory requirements to obtain these services for any type of city.

But the city’s water department sees it as a potentially high-level hazard, requiring a permit and annual inspections that can be a big surprise, especially to homeowners who are inheriting an irrigation system along with a new house. As gardeners get their systems turned back on for spring, here are some things they need to know about staying within the law and maintaining a healthy water supply to their homes — and their neighbors’. What does the city government require for operation of a sprinkler system?

Please see this recent post on system development fee law changes for the most current look at the cost to connect to a water and wastewater system. It is now also the question that may be haunting some municipal water managers throughout North Carolina after a recent North Carolina Supreme Court decision involving water impact fees.
These words are not found in the almost identical statutes that authorize fees for other public water utilities Counties, and Cities: There are many ways of calculating and labeling up front water fees across North Carolina as shown in a detailed survey of these fees carried out by the Environmental Finance Center in Industry standards put out by professional organizations such as the American Water Works Association and the Water Environment Federation that guide consultants in advising how to calculate system development charges include multiple methods for calculating these charges, some which consider future costs and some which only consider past costs.
The North Carolina case highlights how important state law and state cases are in determining acceptable practices. Utilities across the North Carolina now will have to examine how they justified their fees and work with their attorneys to carefully evaluate the legality of their existing fees. We will provide more information and guidelines on these and other water charges in future posts. Original May 26, post:

Septic systems, unlike sewer systems, are privately owned and maintained. Septic systems consist of two parts: Sewage enters the septic tank from a large pipe running from the house.

Where any of the terms defined in this Section are used in these design standards, the definition contained in this Section applies. Biochemical Oxygen Demand Defined The 5-day Biochemical Oxygen Demand BOD5 is defined as the amount of oxygen required to stabilize biodegradable organic matter under aerobic conditions within a five day period in accordance with Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater.
Total 5-day Biochemical Oxygen Demand TBOD5 is equivalent to BOD5 and is sometimes used in order to differentiate carbonaceous plus nitrogenous oxygen demand from strictly carbonaceous oxygen demand. Design Average BOD5 The design average BOD5 is generally the average of the organic load received for a continuous 12 month period for the design year expressed as weight per day. However, the design average BOD5 for facilities having critical seasonal high loading periods e. Design Maximum Day BOD5 The design maximum day BOD5 is the largest amount of organic load to be received during a continuous 24 hour period expressed as weight per day.
Septic vs Sewer: Might Septic be Better?
Blockages or flooding of the side sewer can cause sewer backups. Maintaining the side sewer is the owner’s responsibility. In preparation for storm season, maintenance is more important than ever. Stormwater and Groundwater Winter storms overload the sanitary sewer system in areas where there is excessive stormwater and groundwater through roof gutters, sump pumps, area drains, or cracks or gaps in side sewers.
Remove trees that are planted over or close to your side sewer.

January 22, Campskunk , How Tos 11 Comments First off, I don’t even HAVE a house, so this is for those of you who still have sticks and brick attachments, or are visiting folks who do. Houses have connections that come in handy for us RVers staying at a residence, and I’m not talking about the electricity and water. I’m talking about sewer connections you can dump your waste water tanks into. City sewer connections have what’s called a clean-out, which is a large opening into the sewer line just as it leaves the house and heads toward the city sewer connection.
It’s perfect for dumping your gray and black water tank contents if you don’t want to drive across town and give people money, which is usually what you have to do when dumping in a populated area. The trick, however, is to find this clean-out, because few homeowners know where they are. In houses with connections to a municipal sewage treatment system, the sewer line comes out from under the house and usually makes a bee-line for the street where the sewer lines are.
If you’re in the middle of the block this is easy — corner lots could go either way. Water meters are another utility usually on the side of the lot where the sewer hookup is, so that will help give you a clue to location. Here it is — my sister’s septic clean-out, behind the rhododendron bush and among the shrimp plants. In the south, this is all white PVC pipe. Get a little shovel and gently poke around in the flowerbeds and other stuff along the base of the house’s foundation.

Frequently Asked Questions Why are there differences in fees? A general rule of thumb is that the greater the volume of flow, and the greater the amount of food waste in that flow discharge, the greater the fees. For example, data collected from sampling of wastewater shows that restaurants have a greater impact on our treatment plants than most any other type of business. Restaurants serve food on plates and cook with pots and pans.
Imagine cooking 50 dinners for your family each night and how much more dish washing you would have to do, how many more sinks you would have to have, and how many more times people would use the restroom. Restaurants are broken down into different categories based on types of food service and equipment installed. Categories include full service restaurants use lots of pots, pans, and plates to fast food, pizza parlors, and low impact places like sandwich shops. The fees vary per category.
Full service restaurants are typically the most costly. When are my fees due?
